3 Tricks To Chase Away Homesickness

Moving into a new place is always a stressful experience, but often the homes we’ve grown up in offer comfort to us with our surroundings without us even knowing about it. It’s completely normal to feel a little homesick, whether you’ve moved off to start a new job or continue your education, or you’re having the time of your life on holiday. You don’t have to live with that feeling, here are a few ways you can make your surroundings more comfortable in a new place.

  1. Remind yourself of home
This may sound like the opposite of what you want to do when you’re missing home, but surrounding yourself with a few things to remind you of your old “normal” can set your mind at ease and encourage you to become used to your new environment. It’s not just specific features and colours we’re talking about here, people and pets are just as, if not more, important! Keep in touch with friends and family wherever you are; you may find putting pictures around the place is a great way to remind yourself that you’re loved.
  2. Take the time to love your new space
Sometimes when we feel homesick our first thought is to get out of the place that makes us feel uncomfortable. This can be partially explained by not thinking of our new surroundings as ours. Force yourself to spend a reasonable amount of time in your new environment to get used to your new surroundings. It’s completely normal to feel homesick for a short amount of time, but the more time you spend at your new place the more your brain is likely to accept it and finally relax!
  3. Get involved in decoration
Sometimes putting your own stamp on a place isn’t an option, but when it is, it’s a great idea to put your own personality into a space you’re going to be in. If a certain colour or style is you, don’t be afraid to get out there and use it. You’ll thank yourself later!
