Someone else’s house is always going to be difficult to sleep in, but just a few quick and clear design changes that anyone can do make all the difference to a stay over experience. It’s best to keep guest rooms as neutral as possible, studies show that we find it more difficult to sleep when in an unfamiliar environment and your guests are likely to be most comfortable with neutral colours and bland designs. Despite this, don’t be afraid to add a bit of character to a guest room. Hotels and B&Bs can often afford to make their room decoration more interesting because the majority of the room itself is just the essentials. Saying that, it’s important to stick with clean, white and crisp sheets as guests often expect their bedding to be as clean looking as possible and white is not only easy to keep clean but also instantly makes a room feel more calm. Perfect for the weary traveller!
It’s not all about the big picture, small details are important too. Professionals know that the best guest rooms have basic room essentials that people don’t often take with them on a trip. It’s a great idea to keep cups, a kettle, biscuits, tea and coffee on a tray in the room- even if your guests aren’t likely to use them. Although not as essential as drinks, keeping some form of entertainment such as books, a television or wifi is just as important to make guests feel at home. Now all they need is the nagging neighbours!
